Nano-particles (viruses, virus like particles or VLPs, bacteriophages, etc.) are complex biomolecules which have tremendous potential in both research and therapeutic applications. They differentiate by size, charge distribution and hydrophobic properties and these defining features can be used for their purification or removal.
With their unique structure (flow through channels) and characteristics (convection driven mass transfer, low pressure drop and high binding capacity) monoliths offer low shear-force environment for efficient and cost effective purification of these nano-particles, efficient virus removal in virus clearance applications and chromatography column based virus quantitation and process monitoring (CIM analytical columns). Application of monoliths for these purposes has been demonstrated with different viruses (influenza, adenovirus 5, lentivirus, etc.), VLPs (adenovirus 3 VLP) and bacteriophages (Escherichia coli bacteriophage M13, T4, and T7; Staphylococcus aureus bacteriophage VDX-10) and are presented as Application Notes (see the applications list below).
