CIM® C4 A Disk Monolithic Column

Scale-up Need

The need for chromatography column scale up or scale down may rise during many instances in a purification process development. In order to increase the production capacity of a purification process, it may be necessary to suitably increase the size of a chromatography column - this is known as a column scale-up.

Scale-up Ease

One of very important process characteristics is the ease of column scale-up and scale-down. Packing, unpacking and handling sensitivity of large conventional particle based columns are usually time consuming and challenging task if such columns are involved in purification process. Also, low flow rates are an issue with particle columns, especially if large size biomolecules (DNA, viruses) are being purified.

CIM® Scale-up Advantages

CIM® technology with its monolithic columns offers an entirely different mindset. Since monoliths are made from one piece of polymer resin, there is no need for column packing and unpacking. Because CIM® Monolithic Columns are based on entirely different mass transfer principle, air bubbles are not a problem and the flow rates used can be so high that sometimes HPLC system capabilities are the limiting factor, e.g. CIM® 8 ml Tube Monolithic Columns can be run at flow rates bigger than 200 ml/min!

Simply insert up to four CIM® Disks in a single housing and your own custom CIM® Disk Monolithic Column is ready for use! If you need to go bigger, 8ml CIM® Tube Monolithic Column is the next step up. As you advance from lab to industrial scale process, you will start to use CIM® 80ml, 800ml and 8L tube columns.

Currently Available CIM® Monolithic Columns:

  • 1 (0,34 ml) up to 4 (1.36 ml) disks in a single Disk Monolithic Column
  • 8ml CIM® Tube Monolithic Column
  • 80 ml CIM® Tube Monolithic Column
  • 800 ml CIM® Tube Monolithic Column
  • 8000 ml CIM® Tube Monolithic Column

Linear Speed Calculator

To recreate identical operating conditions on the scaled column as the unscaled one, the linear flow rate must be kept constant. The volumetric flow rate required to keep a constant linear flow rate between CIM® Monolithic Columns can be found by using this easy Method transfer calculator

Chromatography column scale-up has never been as easy as with CIM® monoliths!
